Prana Vayu Energy Flow in Yoga-Imbalances and Restoring Balances

It goes to the credit and appreciation of our ancient yogis that they knew about human body much better than we know it today, even with all the medical advancements. Their knowledge permeated not only through the body parts and organs but also with energy flows. They were able to establish the precise energy-centers, determine the flow of energies, find out why imbalances existed, knew their effect on physical and mental states of body and how to restore the balance in the energy flows. The aim of this article is to know about the imbalances of each of these vayus, its adverse impact on body and how to restore the balance.

The Prana Vayu

Prana Vayu is located at the topmost part of the body- chest and head. The element of air is dominant in this energy field which flows from navel to throat. This vayu is believed to be good for maintaining proper functioning of heart, lungs, breathing, eating, drinking, swallowing and circulation of blood. It is also crucial for mental stability of the person.

Prana Vayu energy is generated not only by element of air but also by food we eat, fluids we drink, sensory perceptions and mental state.

When there is a balanced flow of the prana vayu energy, you have properly functioning heart and lungs and the circulation of blood is also proper which is shown in normal blood pressure. The inflow and outflow of breath also determines the energy flow. You have a peace of mind and are in control of your mental state. This is also the energy which propels you forward in life and fills you with mental strength to face every aspect of life.

The imbalances in Prana Vayu can be known when there is problem in breathing, issues in blood pressure and problems with heart or lungs.

How to achieve balance in prana vayu flow?

The balance of energy and movement in this Vayu can be achieved by doing certain breathing exercises. These include the Bhastrika pranayama and Jalandhara Bandha.

A number of yogasanas are also helpful in this respect. These are Gomukh Asana, Urdhava Mukha Shvan Asana, Adho Mukha Shvan Asana and Parivritta Janu Shirsh Asana. These asanas are believed to be helpful in restoring the balance of energy flow.
