Can Diabetes be Cured With Pranayama?

 

Diabetes is a condition in which the sugar content in blood is more than desirable levels. This condition arises when the body is not able to break down sugar molecules completely and these are released in the blood, thereby increasing its level. The effect of high blood sugar levels in body are that it can lead to improper functioning of different parts of the body. And, due to this, there are ailments. So, the question is how to cure diabetes?

Well, there are a number of medications available in the market which can be used to cure high blood sugar levels in the body. These have to be taken regularly, often daily. Some people even have to take the insulin injections on regular basis for control of high blood sugar levels. Insulin helps in breaking down of sugar. However, besides medication, there are different natural ways of controlling sugar levels. The three such methods are of yoga, pranayama and meditation.

We examine here the role of pranayama in control of high blood sugar. Pranayama for diabetes is an effective cure. By performing different breathing exercises on regular basis, one can bring down the high sugar levels to normal ones. The reason why pranayama is helpful in this respect is because of the fact that it reduces the stress levels which reduce the release of glucagon in body. This improves the performance of insulin in body.

Which pranayamas are effective in controlling high sugar levels?

Some of the pranayamas which can do wonders are-

a)  Kapalbhatti - In this pranayama, the pancreas are stimulated to release more insulin. It also helps in balancing the basal metabolism rate.

b)  Anulom Vilom- The anulom vilom practice is helpful in reducing the stress levels of the body which helps in reducing the insulin resistance of the body.

c)  Bhaskrika Pranayama- In this pranayama, the air is inhaled and exhaled forcefully using the full strength of lungs. This massages the internal organs, muscles of stomach and leads to reduction of carbon dioxide and increase in oxygen levels in the body.

d)  Bhramari: In this pranayama, the ears are closed with fingers of hand and the humming bee sound is recited with closed lips. This breathing technique is helpful in sending vibrations and energy to mind which leads to its relaxation. It has the effect of calming down the mind. Once the mind the relaxed, the stress levels are reduced and the body is better able to reduce sugar to required levels in the blood.

All these breathing exercises are good for oxygenation of the cells of the body, providing vitality to these, improving their functioning and leading to better wellness. Therefore, pranayama is single most important natural method of cutting down high sugar levels in blood.
