Is Yoga for High Blood Pressure Really Effective?

Can yoga poses, or asanas, be used for controlling the high blood pressure? Are these really effective? Do we have to stop taking the medicines for hypertension after taking to yoga? These are some of the questions which people normally ask. There are simple answers to these queries which, if followed, can help significantly in controlling high BP. Yoga for high BP is effective under certain conditions which are given below-

a)  People will hypertension are not eligible to do all types of asanas. So, it is very important to know which types of asanas or poses are not allowed for these people. Normally, difficult poses of which involve a good deal of strain or a rush of blood are not advised in the beginning. Inversion poses, such as head-stand, etc are also prohibited. Light and easy asanas are good to begin with.

b)  The body also needs time to get adjusted to these asanas, so time shall be given. Do not expect to get the results from the very first sitting of practice itself. You have to incorporate this lifestyle change in order to make it work effectively. Just as to take out time for having food or for any other routine work, you have to take out time for doing this practice.

c)  Another important point is that you have to be immersive in yoga while doing it. This means that total focus has to be on these asanas only. Mind training to be mindful will have to be done. Slowly, this practice helps to ward off unwanted thoughts, which reduces the level of stress. This stress reduction reduces the tensions in muscles which improves the blood flow naturally. Therefore, you can expect a movement from agitated state of mind to peaceful mind. This works at the level of hormones which help in creating conditions conducive for normal blood pressure.

a)  Do it slow. Do not rush with poses. You shall relax, take due pauses in between these postures. There shall be no instinct to rush doing it. Time shall be given to gradually move up the ladder of asana difficulty level. There shall be no disappointment if you are not able to do any particular asana. Work with a positive attitude with a strong will power to eliminate this problem.

While taking up asanas, it is very important to make it a regular practice, and be mindful while doing these. Being mindful during this course helps in cultivating a habit of not heeding to unwanted thoughts. This in turn helps throughout the day in being mindful about the daily activities. The advantage is that over a period of time, you begin to feel that the mind is relaxed and there is always a peaceful mind. This state comes into being due to activation or stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system of the body. So, being mindful while doing yoga is a good way to cultivate this habit. And, being regular, helps its cultivation in a disciplined manner.
