The Butterfly Pose of Yoga For Health

Asanas form an integral part of attaining wellness through yoga. These postures are derived from the different poses which birds, animals or other living or non-living things make or have. The yogis noted these poses and found out how these could be helpful for humans. One such pose is of the butterfly. This is also called popularly as the Baddha Konasana, literal meaning Bound Angle pose.

How is it done?

Baddha Konasana is done by sitting down on floor on your hips with toes touching each other from the side of the inner arch. Catch hold of the conjoint toes and pull these towards your groin while keeping these down. This will lead the knees to keep apart and you will feel the stretch in groin and pelvic region of the body.

The alignment of the toes shall be right at the central line of the body.

With hands holding the toes, you can move the knees up and down just as butterfly flaps its wings. With this flapping, the muscles will move and adjust themselves to develop stretch and strength.

When toes are completely close to groin, you can even bend forward and attempt to touch the floor with forehear. This stretches the backbone. However, this variation shall be done to the extent you are comfortable with.

How is it beneficial for body?

Baddha Konasana benefits the body in multiple ways. The main parts of the body which are affected by it are lower back, pelvic, hamstrings and knees. This is a good hip-opener exercise for the beginners to yoga. With its regular practice, you will notice that the inner thigh and groin muscles are stretched slightly. The muscles of the lower back region are also exercised enabling these to be more flexible and relaxed.

Kidneys and prostate gland functioning is also regulated with its practice. This is because it does minor massage to these body parts as well.

Benefits for Pregnant Women

Baddha Konasana is of special help to pregnant women. This helps in easing the pain of delivery, leading to easier childbirth. The functions of ovaries are also normalized by practicing this pose.

Supta Baddha Konasana

A variant of the Baddha Konasana is the Supta Baddha Konasana. As the name suggest, this is a pose done in lying down position with the spine resting on the floor. This pose resembles a person who is sleeping, therefore, called ‘Supta’ Baddha Konasana. The position and posture of the toes remains the same as that of the Baddha Konasana.

Who shall not do it?

People having lower back pain issues shall avoid doing it. If you experienced pain in knees, it is better to get the support of some cushion. While performing this asana, it is important to note that the hips do not rotate backward. These shall ideally be rotating from front.
