Yoga for Back Pain Relief

The problem of back pain can arise due to a number of reasons. Whatever may be the reason, the person feels really helpless if the pain is unbearable and is hardly able to stand or move. Modern medical science provides the treatment for back pain with strong doses of painkillers and in some situations even surgery is recommended. Most of the sufferers are not aware that even in situations where surgery is recommended a major percentage of cases can be resolved by doing proper yoga asanas. It is due to this lack of awareness that the people undergo surgeries. The doctors are reluctant to advice yoga therapy because they are not aware of its usefulness themselves. They have been educated and trained in modern medical science but not in ancient and alternative disciplines of wellness, such as yoga.

Let us first look at some of the common types of back pain ailments which can be treated by these postures. These are-

1.  Slip disc or Herniated Disc- This is a condition in which the outer ring of the disc becomes weak or torn and allows the inner portion to slip out.

2.  Sciatica- When there is lower back pain which radiates along the sciatica nerve down to hips and one of the legs, this is the condition of sciatica.

3.  Spondylitis or Cervical Spondylosis- This is a medical condition in which the disc of neck region is affected by wear and tear, primarily due to age.

4.  Lumbar Spondylitis- ‘Lumbar’ refers lower back part of spine. Lumbar Spondylosis is a situation in which the lower back part wears and tears due to age.

5.  Ankylosis Spondylitis- This condition is associated with inflammation of spine and large joints and begins in early adulthood. Due to reduced flexibility of spine, there is forward hunch posture.

6.  Compression- The compression in spinal cord can occur anywhere in the length of spine, from neck to lower back. The symptoms of this problem include numbness, pain, loss of bowel or bladder control and weakness. This develops due to many conditions, the most common reason being ageing.

7.  Muscular Strain- Lumbar muscle strain occurs when the muscles are abnormally stretched and are torn.

Each of these back pain issues can be resolved with proper set of asanas. These asanas of yoga for back pain shall be performed under the guidance of an expert who is not only good in yoga but also in specific problems of back pain which need to be treated. If you go to a yoga teacher who is not well trained himself in treating each of these problems, you may not be able to resolve the issue. On the contrary, you might end up aggravating these.
