Anulom Vilom and Hypertension

 


Anulom Vilom is an alternate nostril breathing method which is believed to be beneficial for health in more than one ways. In this breathing method, one nostril is used for inhalation and the other for exhalation alternately. This method of breathing requires you to sit straight in stress-less posture, keeping the spine straight and then practice the pranayama. All while doing this exercise of breathing the focus shall remain on the breath, feeling it all the way during the inhale and exhale.

What It Does?

By breathing in this manner for about 10 minutes or so, you will feel that your conscious is drawing inwards and you are attaining the peace of mind. Slowly, you will feel relaxed and free from stress. This is believed to be one of the best pranayama for hypertension.

The advantage of anulom vilom breathing, you are able to oxygenate your body cells much better. Better oxygenation means that the cells retain their vitality and function properly. At the same time, this relaxes the mind and in controlling the blood pressure immediately. On a count of 10, you can feel the difference. This is because the left nostril is associated with the Ida energy whereas the right nostril is associated with the pingala energy. Ida and Pingala are both stimulated with this type of breathing which brings about a balance between the energy flows through these. This helps in keeping our body good at cellular level.

Anulom Vilom is helpful in preventing and even treating many physical and mental ailments, such as blood pressure, diabetes, insomnia, etc. other diseases.

Though there is no upper time limit to practice of anulom vilom, it is suggested that at least 10 minutes shall be devoted to this exercise. It has certain variations as well which are also helpful and these can also be practiced on regular basis.
