Meditation and Blood Sugar Control

You have heard that diet control helps in sugar control. Right, no disputing the point. You have also heard that yoga and pranayama helps in controlling the diabetic condition. Again, no disputing the point. Have you heard that meditation also helps in sugar control? Many of you will take it with a pinch of salt. How come people sitting in a yogic posture and not moving a bit be able to beat the ailment? Difficult to believe, but it is a fact of the life and is true to its every word. So, how does meditation control blood sugar?

The very first thing which meditation, whether done in Vipassana or Mindfulness way, does is to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which brings peace to mind. When it happens, the state of mind is relaxed and the mind sends and receives the right signals to the body. It helps to achieve a state of homeostasis within the body. So, gradually the whole of body parts begin to function properly. It is during this process that the secretion of insulin begins to reach the normal levels. This process remains at the control of the blood sugar levels through meditation.

A calm mind is good at treating insomnia. This ability to induce sleep is a natural cure for many ailments as it helps in bringing normalcy to functioning of body.

The state of meditation automatically controls the hunger pangs which reduces the intake of excessive food. If you are taking nutritious food, then limited quantities are sufficient to satisfy the body. However, if you do not take nutritious food, then you might want to have more because the body is not yet satisfied. Interestingly, the nutritious food eaten in right quantity also helps attain better depths in meditation.

Yoga and pranayama further add to the control of blood sugar because pranayama generates sufficient in body and improves circulation of air through deep breathing. This improves metabolism of body and also stimulates the nerves of nervous systems and other parts of the body. Yoga is instrumental in exercising and massaging different parts of the body which are helpful in balancing different doshas and improving functioning of different systems of the body.
